Golden Gates, Kyiv

Located in Ukraine.

Golden Gate is one of the few architectural monuments of the Old Russian state (Kievan Rus) during the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise.

Under Yaroslav the Wise, the territory of Kiev was actively expanding, which required the construction of new fortifications — powerful ramparts with reinforced wooden cages, deep ditches were erected. The city of Yaroslav the Wise was surrounded by earthen ramparts with a total length of 3.5 kilometers, they passed along the present streets of the center of Kiev – from Lviv Square (where the Lviv Gates were located) along Yaroslavov Street to the Golden Gate, went down to Independence Square (where the Lyadsky Gate stood) and again climbed up to the Mikhailovskaya Square. Historians claim that the Upper City was surrounded by an earthen fence with three gates, the most durable of which turned out to be the Golden Gate, which was the central entrance to the city.
