Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest stratovolcano, located in northeastern Tanzania, the highest point of the continent (5895 m above sea level). Kilimanjaro rises above the Masai Plateau, which is located at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level.
The highest point of the mountains and Africa is Uhuru peak Kibo volcano, 5895 m, referring to the “Seven Peaks”. The peak was first conquered by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889. The 2 remaining peaks are also extinct volcanoes: Mawenzi (5149 m), Shira (3962 m).
