Smolensk is a city in western Russia, the administrative, industrial and cultural center of the Smolensk region. This is one of the oldest cities in Russia (the first chronicle mention refers to the year 863).
The center, the old part of the city, occupies a high, heavily rugged left bank of the Dnieper. Wavy terrain, a large number of rivers, rivulets and ravines, rich vegetation give Smolensk a surprisingly beautiful and picturesque view.
