Omsk is one of the largest cities in Russia, located at the confluence of the Irtysh and Omi rivers, a major scientific, cultural, sports and industrial center. A major transportation hub: the Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city from west to east, and the Irtysh navigable river from south to north.

Founded in 1716. Officially received city status in 1782. The capital of the Russian state (1918-1920).
