Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is an inactive coal mine in the city of Essen. It was one of the largest and most productive mines in the Ruhr region. Since 2001, the Zollverein mine has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is the cultural and creative center of Essen, the thematic station of the regional project “Industrial Culture Way” of the Ruhr region. Here you can visit the Coal Road Museum, the Ruhr Region Museum, the North Rhine-Westphalia Design Center, the Margaretenhöh Ceramics Museum. The former coke plant houses an exhibition of contemporary art, as well as the permanent exhibition “Ilya Kabakov’s Projects Palace”.
