Located in New Zealand.

Doubtful Soundis fjord in the southwestern part of the New Zealand South Island in the territory of the Fiordland region. It is a popular tourist attraction.

Dautful Sound belongs to one of New Zealand’s largest fjords. It is located in remote mountainous terrain, so the coast of the fjord is steep, and for most of the year you can reach it only by water. There are three distinct arms, each of which has several large waterfalls falling from a height of 600 m. In the rainy season, the number of waterfalls in the area increases to several hundred.

One of the features of the fjord is the presence of two distinct layers of water in it, which are barely mixed with each other. The upper few meters represent fresh water that falls into Dautful Sound as a result of the melting of local glaciers and mountain snow. As this water flows through extensive forests, it has a brown tint. The bottom layer of water in the fjord is cold sea water. The access of light to this part of the Dautful Sound is greatly hampered by the brownish freshwater layer, therefore many deep-water species of local flora and fauna are found only at shallow depths.

The British discoverer James Cook, who discovered this fjord in 1770, became the European discoverer of the island. Nevertheless, the navigator did not dare to send his ship into it, since it was not clear whether it would sail under it. Therefore, Cook called the bay “Bay of Doubt” (born Doubtful Harbor). Subsequently, whalers and sealers renamed it Dautful Sound.
